Extra care housing

These are self-contained flats within a communal housing scheme that enable people who require extra support, to continue to live independently with flexible support and the security of 24/7 emergency response and care from on-site staff. Most of the tenants are aged 55 years or more.

Extra care schemes

These have a 24-hour care presence in the building to meet the care and housing support needs of the tenants. Extra care housing is often classed as independent living with some supported living, like the mid-day meal being provided as part of the tenancy. Support is tailored to the needs of each tenant, as part of their care package, to enable people to live in their own home as independently as possible.

Schemes have community-based facilities and visits from the community-based professionals, for example they may have:

• communal activities
• a restaurant/dining area
• an on-site hairdresser

Each property is self-contained with a fitted kitchen, bathroom with walk in shower (level access wet-room), one or two bedrooms, a lounge and their own front door.

The size and model of Extra Care varies across Salford. Some are purpose built schemes and others have been converted from other types of housing. In some schemes the housing provider is responsible for activities and in others it is the care provider. As well as variation in contract specification and models, schemes are also shaped by their size and layout and what resources they have available.
