Groups and Activities for Disabled Children

Universal Services

Any child or young person can access these services. Providers are encouraged to be inclusive and accessible to those with special educational needs and/or disabilities by making reasonable adjustments. Children/young people do not need an assessment to use these services and they do not need referring. Please contact the service directly.

Examples of universal services you can find on the My City Directory include:

  • Youth groups/clubs
  • Sports clubs
  • Drama clubs
  • Dance studios
  • Brownies, Scouts, Beavers etc

Targeted Services

These services have been commissioned by Salford City Council specifically for children and young people with disabilities who may have difficulties accessing universal services. The providers of these services have a higher level of training to support children and young people. As with universal services, you do not need to apply or be referred to access these services. Please contact the service directly.

Examples of targeted services you can find on the My City Directory include:

  • Salford Community Leisure – a range of activities including Swimming, Dance and Music (Music)
  • You Can - Oakwood Youth Group
  • Endorphins Group Ltd
  • Chatsworth High School After School Club
  • I am Celebrating Autism in Manchester (ASGMA - Autistic Society of Greater Manchester Area)
  • The Federation of Jewish Services
  • Special Spirits
  • Salford CVS grant funded organisations

Specialist Services

These services are for children and young people who require specialist short break support, as identified through a social care (social work) assessment, or health assessment.

These services are for children and young people with disabilities whose daily lives are profoundly and substantially affected by a disability as follows:

  • Children and young people with multiple and severe disability
  • Children with a life limiting illness
  • Children with a complex physical disability

Examples of services at this level include:

  • Short Break Specialist Foster Care
  • Outreach support from a specialist agency commissioned by the Council, to enable a child or young person to access activities within the community.
  • Commissioned services who can assist with care in the home.

In addition, families may be eligible for a Direct Payment to employ a Personal Assistant. Visit the Children and Families portal in the 'External links' tab.

Highly Specilaist Services

Services at this level are provided in addition to specialist services where needs are identified through a social care assessment, or children and young people’s continuing care assessment.

Highly specialist services include:

  • Short Break Specialist Foster Care
  • Overnight short break care at Granville respite unit, for young people aged over 14 years
  • Overnight short break care for children aged under 14 years
  • An increased package of support from Commissioned services, including outreach support and/or care in the child or young person’s home

In addition, families may be eligible for a Direct Payment to employ a Personal Assistant.
