Chinese Dragon Boat Race

Hundreds of daring paddlers compete in the annual Chinese dragon boat race at Salford Quays.

27 teams, made up of 10 paddlers, a drummer and a steersman, sail their decorated boats as spectators spur them on.

The sport is becoming increasingly popular, with more than 50 million people taking part in dragon boat races last year and a growing number calling for it to be made an Olympic sport.

The event is organised by the Xinhua Chinese Association, and a festival was held alongside the races.

Visitors can tuck into  traditional Chinese food such as Zongzi – sticky dumplings and fried cake made of wheat flour, rice and sweet potato - while competitors get  soaked in the water.
