Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service
Salford Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) is part of the Salford City Council People’s Directorate and provides support to pupils in schools and families who are from an ethnic minority heritage. These children may have English as an additional language (EAL), may be of Gypsy Roma Traveller (GRT) heritage or have asylum or refugee status.
We offer a variety of services to schools to support these children but will also offer advice and support to parents on their child’s education.
Common Questions from parents we support include:
- My child can’t speak English, how will they cope at school?
- What extra support is put in place to help my child with their learning?
- What can I do at home to support my child to learn English? What resources are available?
- We speak our first language at home, is this ok?
- Are there ESOL classes I can attend to improve my own English?
- Can my child do a GSCE in their own language?
We are a Traveller family and will be travelling part of the year, can my children keep their school places?
