Beyond Empower

We work with disabled people across Salford who want to become more active.  We carry out an initial assessment, with individiuals or within a group (generally at the person's home, but in any location that suits you).  The assessment involves some basic health checks, including height, weight (BMI), blood pressure, spirometry (to check lungs) and a pin prick to check blood glucose and cholesterol levels (all of these checks are completely optional).

We use a wellness star from which we ask a some questions around wellbeing.  We will identify goals with the individual and any activities that they might be interested in doing.  Activities have included all sorts in the past, including walking, running, accessing the gym, swimming, skiing, gardening, rollerskating, arts and crafts and many more.  We will research the activities and then provide support.  After approximately 8 weeks, we will carry out a next steps assessment, involving the same health and wellbeing checks as completed in the initial assessment, to see what changes there may have been.  We follow up at 3 and 12 months to see if the individual is still remaining active.  Our main aim is to integrate people into their local community so that they can eventually, independently sustain activities themselves and lead happier, healthier lives.
