MAPAS Centre
The MAPAS Centre is the beating heart of MAPAS (Music and Performing Arts Salford). It is a place to enjoy making music and performing arts together under the guidance of our experienced and professional team of tutors.
The MAPAS Centre includes bands, orchestras, choirs, drama groups, musical theatre companies and a wide variety of ensembles to suit all abilities and musical tastes. Most of our activities are based at Moorside High School in Swinton, but we do also use other locations across the City so please visit our website for the most up to date information.
To help children and young people feel welcomed and support them settling in, MAPAS can arrange a visit for any child/young person to the location of their group prior to their first rehearsal and/or facilitate an in person/virtual meet with the MAPAS tutor who will be delivering the sessions.
The positive benefits of Music and Performing Arts go themselves a long way to enhancing the overall wellbeing of all the children and young people involved. MAPAS are also able to signpost to partner organisations within and outside SCL/Salford Council who specialise in children/young people’s mental health.
Staff training includes
- Inclusive Activity training from Empowered and EqualityDiversity Training
- Working With People With Autism In Sport (Dance).
Some examples of adjustments to our sessions to aid the experiences for the children/young people are:
- cue cards
- specific groups for children, young people and adults with SEND (see below)
- removal of all western music notation with a focus on learning by rote and asking the audience not to clap a group onto the stage at a performance in order to alleviate unwelcome noise/anxiety.
- MAPAS will do all they can to ensure a holistic and enjoyable experience for all children and young people.
